The youth in Uganda are the youngest
population in the world, with 77% of its population being under 30 years of
age. According to National Planning Authority (NPA)
statistics released, 700,000 people join the job market every year regardless
of qualification but only 90,000 get something to do. Therefore 87% of people
are ready to work but can’t find a job.
The National Council for Higher Education
(NCHE) records show that there are 47 universities, nine of which are public,
nine degree-awarding institutions and 207 other tertiary institutions. All
these send their students into the world of work annually, where they find thousands
of other graduates floating without what to do.
Then there is you, a fresh graduate, or
currently awaiting graduation, a student, or has plans to join institutions for
higher learning., with a bright shining passion for your dream career and how
you assume it to be.
Personally, there are mornings I woke up
feeling lost, and others while scrolling down my news feed or moving around my
hood I met young people within the same age bracket who breath the same air,
eat the same Rolex but gave me a life changing the inspiration that has pushed
me to process the way I do.
So in this blog, I’ll give you my 2019 most
inspiring young people, that have pushed
me to do, think and act better, I hope you follow them as they inspire
you do and be a better person the next year 2020
This group is made of a group of 4 to 7 young
men, self-driven without waiting for someone to supervise them or dictate a
particular time of the day to start or live work, most of us crave supervision
and specified working hours 8 to 5. The art pieces, the comic art they bring
together, the issues they discus at the studio, oh my oh my, you’d feel
challenged that you haven’t come up with anything tangible that’s valuable with
your life, yet you wake up each morning and do absolutely nothing with your life.
Is an illustrator, painter and draws portraits,
I haven’t met him in person, but I checked his bio after a friend shared his
art on my timeline. I must say each time I meet someone who can think beyond
merely typing words on a Microsoft word sheet, I’m amused, speechless and
inspired. Few days ago as the rest of Kampala revelers were star struck by
Jidena’s presence in the country, this young man was working tirelessly to come
up with a beautiful art piece for Jidenna and when he received it, he endorsed
it promised to work with him in the future. Yes, he is earning but most
importantly growing, learning and connecting.
Lucy Kansiime (not real names)
A 21 year old, I met her at a recent job, she
is a social media influencer who has grown her following over the time on one
of the most trending social sites, twitter. She need not to go to school to
acquire the knowledge to be a digital influencer.
John Mukisa (not real names)
I love sports, I do play basketball however
over the time I’ve realized I grasp a little slower than other players.
Basketball is an aggressive game that requires a person’s mental and physical
strength to be able stand out as an extra ordinary player. Watching this young
man play on court, practice off the game, push extra hours in the morning, and
then game day preparations, on court, the discipline and smartness he keeps as
a sportsman, oh my oh my, id fall in love with the game all over again.
All the above stories have a few key points in
common, persistence, hard work, self-drive, the solid passion for the dreams
people have, they pursue and push hard.
While you struggle to make your dreams come
true, may you live along with people that believe in you, push you to do
better, challenge you out of your comfort zone. In your early twenties, dear
girl/boy child, I hope and pray that you realize sex, money, relationships,
cannot be an achievement or an accomplishment, I hope that you invest that energy
into discovering yourself, growing your passion, working hard to pursue dreams,
acquiring knowledge from every source, learning lessons from every experience
in order to be better, better than your family members, so that your little
brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces look up to you.
Merry Christmas, you have come so far, may the
new Year inspire you to go wild and hungry to chase your dreams. Keep you sight
on the big picture.
Bye
Joanne
